Editorial Policy: Sources, Corrections and Limits
How pages are researched
Every page starts from the IRS page, statute or agency document that governs the topic, not from other websites. Fees, thresholds, deadlines and penalty rates are copied from that source and linked beside the figure. Statistics come from the IRS Data Book, with the fiscal year named. When a source does not publish a number, the page says so. Pages show the date they were last checked, and figures that change are rechecked at least quarterly, and whenever the IRS announces a change.
What we will not say
- That any outcome is "guaranteed", likely, or typical for you. Acceptance of an Offer in Compromise, for example, depends on a financial analysis the IRS performs on your facts.
- That you can settle for "pennies on the dollar", "eliminate" or "erase" a tax debt, or "stop the IRS" with one step.
- That this site, or any company, has special access to the IRS, or that a program is secret or little known.
- That you should hire a company. We describe what companies do and how to check them; the decision is yours.
- Anything about your individual case. We do not give advice, and we do not answer case-specific questions by email.
Language
The site is written in English and Spanish by people, not machine-translated. Each Spanish page states the same facts, cites the same sources, and links the IRS's own Spanish page where one exists. If the two versions ever disagree, the IRS source controls, and we fix the page.
Corrections
If you find an error, write to the address on the contact page with the page address and the IRS or legal source that shows the correct figure. We check it against the source, correct the page, update its date, and note the correction at the bottom of the page when the change is material.
Independence
Companies that pay us do not see pages before publication, do not approve wording, and cannot buy placement in article text. The only place a company appears is the labeled box described on How we make money.
